How long is the World Cup 2026?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from Thursday 11 June 2026 to Sunday 19 July 2026. That is 39 days, which works out to just over 5 and a half weeks.
It is the longest and largest World Cup yet because the tournament expands to 48 teams and 104 matches.
How many teams qualify from each group in World Cup 2026?
Not just two. The top two teams in each of the 12 groups qualify automatically, and they are joined by the eight best third-placed teams.
That gives the tournament a full Round of 32. So 32 teams advance from the group stage, not 24.
What happens if teams are level on points in the World Cup?
FIFA's current 2026 group rules do not start with overall goal difference. They go in this order:
- Points in the matches between the tied teams
- Goal difference in the matches between the tied teams
- Goals scored in the matches between the tied teams
- Overall goal difference in all group matches
- Overall goals scored in all group matches
- Team conduct score based on cards
- Most recent FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking
So the practical answer is that head-to-head comes first, then overall numbers, then discipline, then FIFA ranking.
Why is the World Cup 2026 in 3 countries?
The 2026 World Cup is hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The three-country setup gives FIFA enough stadiums, training sites, transport capacity and fan infrastructure to support the expanded 48-team tournament.
It also makes this the widest geographical World Cup ever, which is great for scale but more demanding for travel and recovery.
How many matches are played in World Cup 2026?
There are 104 matches in total. That is up from 64 in the old 32-team format.
The increase comes from the larger field, 12 groups instead of 8, and the new Round of 32.
Where is the World Cup 2026 final?
The final will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on 19 July 2026.
FIFA uses the tournament name New York New Jersey Stadium, but it is the same venue most fans know as MetLife.
How many venues are used in the 2026 World Cup?
The tournament uses 16 venues across the three host countries:
- 11 in the United States
- 3 in Mexico
- 2 in Canada
That is the highest venue count in World Cup history.
What is different about the 2026 World Cup format?
- 48 teams instead of 32
- 12 groups of 4
- 72 group-stage matches
- A new Round of 32 after the groups
- The finalists can now play 8 matches instead of 7
The format is bigger, longer and more forgiving because some third-placed teams still get through.
How many games does each team play in the group stage?
Each team plays 3 group matches, one against every other team in its group.
How does the knockout stage work in World Cup 2026?
After the group stage, the tournament moves into single-elimination football:
- Round of 32
- Round of 16
- Quarter-finals
- Semi-finals
- Third-place match
- Final
If a knockout match is level after 90 minutes, it goes to extra time and then penalties if needed.
