World Cup 2026 prize money

FIFA has announced a $1 billion (USD) total prize fund for World Cup 2026 — more than double the $440 million paid out for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Here is how the money is distributed.

Prize money by round

FIFA distributes prize money to the national football associations (not directly to players). The breakdown by tournament stage:

Group stage exit (bottom 16 teams)$10m per team
Round of 32 exit$13m per team
Round of 16 exit$17m per team
Quarter-final exit$25m per team
Fourth place (third-place play-off loser)$30m
Third place (third-place play-off winner)$35m
Runner-up (Final loser)$40m
World Cup winner$50m

Figures are approximations based on FIFA's announced total fund. Official per-team amounts will be confirmed by FIFA closer to the tournament.

Why the fund doubled from 2022

The $1 billion prize fund represents FIFA's largest ever distribution. The increase reflects:

  • Larger tournament. 48 teams instead of 32 means more teams to pay out, and more matches generating broadcast and commercial revenue.
  • Three wealthy host nations. USA, Canada, and Mexico offer large existing broadcast markets and infrastructure, reducing FIFA's hosting costs compared to Qatar.
  • Commercial growth. FIFA's broadcast and sponsorship deals for 2026 are substantially larger than 2022.
  • Commitment to player compensation. There has been increasing pressure on FIFA and national associations to ensure prize money reaches players, not just association executives.

How prize money reaches players

FIFA pays prize money to the national football association (FA) of each participating country. What happens after that depends on the association:

  • Some associations distribute a fixed percentage directly to players
  • Others retain a larger portion for national football development
  • Club compensation (for releasing players to national teams) is handled separately through FIFA's club protection programme

FIFA introduced a mandatory minimum player payment rule: participating associations must pay each player at least $7,000 for taking part, regardless of association income. The actual amounts paid to players at major associations are typically much higher.

Prize money in context: your sweepstake

Your sweepstake prize pot is obviously a little smaller than $50 million. But the prize money structure — highest reward for the winner, with consolation payments for going out early — mirrors exactly how sweepstake points work. Getting knocked out in the group stage still earns points; winning the tournament earns the most.
